But what happens when lives, born for great purposes, get caught up in the fray of life’s evil?

What happens when learned behaviors of promiscuity and illicit habits derail good intentions?

What happens when one is never taught to dream, to reach for something higher then the surrounding moral decay?

What happens with the grip of poverty battles you on every side?

Nothing good!

Unless a new hope, a new role model, a  new example, a new opportunity is introduced and mentored in these lives.

I have to hold on to this as I admit to some recent discouragement and hopelessness in light of recent headlines.

*Within Latin America during the years of 1990 – 2010, Honduras and Mexico where the only 2 countries where the numbers of persons living in poverty increased rather then decreased (as stated in the following article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-15957422). And this country is swarming with mission agencies, NGO’s, and foreign aid!  What is going wrong?

Likewise shocking:

*In light of the world’s countries, Honduras ranks insignificant in most any measuring stick one would want to apply.  Yet it holds the recently released infamous title of having the highest murder rate in the WORLD!  Teeny tiny little Honduras is home to approximately 20 murders a day!  Corruption runs rampant, youth gangs and drug lords reek havoc on a society struggling to survive.

Do the odds look overwhelming?  Absolutely…at least when I look at the big picture.  I know we are often encouraged to look at ‘the big picture’ as a way to get a broader perspective and greater discernment.

But I think for the moment, my focus needs to draw a tighter circle.  I can’t change those statistics, but God has asked me to touch and influence the lives that cross my path today.  When I look into the eyes of the children above my heart beats to effect a lasting change.  When I stand on the promise that God directs our steps according to his “big picture” plan, I can focus on reflecting His love and grace to those around me today…

…knowing God, and only God will be the One to bring hope and purpose to a dying world.  What a privilege if you and I can be a small part of that!
