Snowmen in Choluteca…

009

Ok – so they aren’t real!  But if you turn down the AC very low and imagine really hard as you drive by an inflatable Frosty, you can imagine for a short moment that the temperature is less then the raging 95 degrees burning through your car windows.

Or not!

This evening we were invited over to the home of Doña Chinita, a teacher at the San Jorge Elementary School, to see her annual nativity display.

We had no idea what we were getting into really, but having received repeated phone calls and invitations, we figured it was something rather important.

It was a delightful outing!

It has become a tradition which draws people from around the neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods to enjoy the creativity.

Four women (Doña Chinita on left) spend at least six days unpacking, organizing, and creating a miniature replica of the city of Choluteca – with a few extra additions like the nativity and the above pictured Frosty!

The famed Choluteca Bridge through which one enters the city, (although in reality, no sharks inhabit its waters).

The neighborhood of our church is even present, Barrio Los Mangos.

New this year is the artistic creation of the nativity scene made entirely out of pop bottle tops.

Honduran hospitality never fails to offer at least a cup of Coke if not a tasty morsel and we were blessed with both tonight.

Despite the fact we had just come from supper, we couldn’t turn down the plates of enchiladas and cold Coke we were so eagerly served.

Caffeine and grease – an excellent bedtime snack!

Altogether – a wonderful evening and peek into the traditions of Honduran culture!
